The ViewSonic X11-4K, launched in 2023 as the successor to the ViewSonic X11-4K , brings notable enhancements while retaining the innovative features of its predecessor. This portable and easy-to-install projector boasts an upgraded LED light source, capable of projecting large images from 30 to 200 inches. With extensive connectivity options and compatibility with HDR10 and HLG sources, it promises a superior viewing experience. Additionally, the Harman Kardon audio system enhances its appeal.
Design and Ergonomics: Award-Worthy Aesthetics
The ViewSonic X11-4K continues the design excellence of its predecessor, which earned an iF Design Award. Although less compact than some portable projectors, it features a stylish design suitable for mobility. A magnetic rear cover with a leather-like finish protects the connectors during transport. The robust construction includes aluminum and high-quality plastic, ensuring durability. A retractable handle makes it easy to carry, while a front foot allows for adjustable projection angles.
Setup and Installation: Quick and Efficient
Setting up the ViewSonic X11-4K is straightforward, thanks to its IR camera for automatic focus and H/V keystone correction. This short-throw projector requires a minimal distance for large image projection, making it ideal for small spaces. Fine-tuning the image is easy with four-axis adjustment and digital zoom, allowing for precise alignment without moving the projector.
Software Interface: Basic but Functional
The X11-4K features a minimalist interface with access to various input sources and 16 GB of internal storage. Screen mirroring is supported via Wi-Fi for iOS and Android devices, although some lag may occur. The Aptoide app store offers limited apps like Netflix and YouTube, with better usability when paired with a streaming device like Chromecast or Fire TV Stick. The ViewSonic vCastSender app provides additional functionality, such as using a smartphone as a remote control.
Performance and Image Quality: Impressive 4K Projection
ViewSonic highlights its 3rd generation LED technology with the ViewSonic X11-4K, promising a brighter image and wider color gamut. The light source uses a 4-diode RGBB system. ViewSonic claims 2,400 LED Lumens, a unit differing from ANSI meant to quantify the Helmholtz-Kohlraush effect inherent to this type of projector. This effect applies to LED projectors and results in different brightness perceptions between colors based on their saturation.
The projected image is pleasing, with impressive size and nice colors, and decent sharpness for a 100-inch projection. However, the ViewSonic X11-4K requires a dark room, as its brightness is insufficient for adequate use otherwise, resulting in a dull and washed-out display.
As mentioned earlier, this projector features a DMD chip (0.47) with XPR processing to simulate 4K. The result is convincing with quality sources, though there is a noticeable lack of detail in familiar test video loops.
Short-throw LED projection has its limits, starting with two slight hot spots visible on our screen, likely due to its quality. The main downside of this 0.47 chip with this LED platform is the contrast level, with shallow blacks and limited peak brightness. The SDR image is correct with sufficient brightness and color when using TV mode. However, the Film mode shows chromatic deviations and low brightness, making it difficult to use without precise calibration. Intense mode provides a vibrant image, though TV mode is preferred for its less saturated and more realistic fidelity.
For HDR sources, the ViewSonic X11-4K offers three EOTF levels to adjust image brightness. However, frequent menu adjustments are necessary to prevent the content from being too dark or overexposed. Overall, the X11-4K delivers a relatively accurate HDR image, but its limited brightness restricts detail retrieval in highlights.
Motion fluidity has improved from the previous iteration. Fast scenes are well-managed with minimal judder during panning and effective frame interpolation. However, visual artifacts appear when increasing frame interpolation settings, visible during action scenes with some blurring around moving objects. The input lag is measured at 125.5 ms, too high for successful gaming sessions.
Audio Quality: Surprisingly Clear Sound
The Harman Kardon audio system with two 8W speakers provides clear and balanced sound, adequate for small to medium-sized rooms. The audio quality complements the visual experience, making it suitable for movie watching without external speakers.
Conclusion: A Solid Improvement
The ViewSonic X11-4K offers significant improvements over its predecessor, with better image quality, ease of setup, and a stylish design. While its contrast ratio and brightness could be better, it excels in dark environments and provides a satisfying 4K viewing experience. Its rich connectivity, compact design, and superior audio make it a versatile choice for both home entertainment and portable use.
